This work was one of the films presented at the "Spring Toei Manga Festival" on March 21, 1975, screened alongside *Kikaider*, *Kamen Rider Amazon*, *The Celestial Maiden: Messenger of the Moon*, *Mazinger Z vs. Getter Robo*, and *This is a UFO! The Flying Saucer*. It was the first theatrical animation directed by Tomoharu Katsumata, the debut film for animation director Reiko Okuyama as a movie animation supervisor, and also the first film produced during the tenure of then Toei Animation president Tomonori Imada.
Produced in commemoration of the "100th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's death," it is based on one of his famous works—*The Little Mermaid*—incorporating extensive Japanese-style adaptations into the story. The nameless protagonist of the original work is named "Marina" (Japanese: マリーナ) in this version.
Upon its release, it received recognition from the Ministry of Education, authorizing the addition of the phrase "Recommended by the Ministry of Education" before its title. It was also a sponsored work for the Okinawa International Ocean Exposition, endorsed by the Central Child Welfare Council of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Japan Children's Literature Association, and recommended by the Governor of Tokyo.
In Hong Kong, this work was translated as "Andersen's Fairy Tales: The Mermaid Princess" and was broadcast on TVB Jade on August 2, 1986.
