One day after the events of "Toy Story," Andy plans to take Woody to Cowboy Camp but accidentally tears Woody's arm seam, leaving Woody deeply worried that his owner might abandon him. Soon after, during a major house cleaning, Andy's mom decides to throw away the old penguin squeaky toy Wheezy. Woody resolves to rescue Wheezy from the yard. While riding the dog Buster to save Wheezy, Woody himself gets left behind in the yard. Toy collector Al McWhiggin spots Woody in the yard and, after failing to negotiate a deal for this rare collectible, steals Woody and takes him to his toy factory. Buzz Lightyear attempts to rescue Woody from Al but fails. However, upon learning that Woody is at Al's toy factory, Buzz, along with Slinky Dog, Mr. Potato Head, Rex the dinosaur, and Hamm the piggy bank, embarks on a mission to save Woody. Woody discovers that the toy factory is filled with cowboy-themed toys, who become very excited upon seeing him. It turns out these toys were collected by the portly toy dealer—they are characters from a once-popular cartoon show called "Woody's Roundup," and Woody is the missing main character. To help Woody understand his origins, they play episodes of the cowboy cartoon for him. Woody learns about his heroic past and realizes these toys were his original partners from back in the day. He also receives unsettling news: the toy dealer plans to sell him and his cowboy companions to a toy museum in Japan! After Woody is stolen, Buzz Lightyear and the other toys carefully analyze the situation, deduce the location of the toy dealer's factory, and form a skilled rescue team to save Woody. At the factory, Buzz encounters rows upon rows of "Buzz Lightyear" toys, as well as his arch-nemesis. Woody is restored to like-new condition, his arm reattached, and he regains his shine. Yet he doesn't want to go to Japan—he wishes to return to Andy's home. However, the affectionate cowgirl Jessie strongly urges him to stay, making him hesitant. Buzz Lightyear's rescue team finally arrives just as the toy dealer is about to take the cowboy toys to catch a flight to Japan.
