Soon, the anime boom that began with "Space Battleship Yamato" arrived, and a theatrical version consisting of a re-edited front part (74 minutes) and back part (65 minutes) of the TV series was produced. It was produced by Yoshinobu Nishizaki, supervised by Toshio Masuda who directed the theatrical anime version of "Space Battleship Yamato," and edited by Kazunori Tanahashi.
The front part was released on July 14, 1979, as part of the encore event "Space Battleship Yamato Festival," which featured re-screenings of "Space Battleship Yamato" and "Farewell, Space Battleship Yamato," distributed by Toei's Foreign Film Division. The distribution revenue was 510 million yen.
However, despite being produced, the back part was ultimately never released in theaters. It first saw the light of day on May 21, 1984, when a video software compiling both the front and back parts of the theatrical version into one was released by Columbia Video.
