China's first prison-themed animation "Buxingzhe" has won the National Legal System Good News Award. Recently, "Buxingzhe," the nation's first educational reform-themed animated series organized and produced by the Education and Rehabilitation Department of Shijiazhuang Prison in Hebei Province, was awarded the Third Prize in the Legal Education Column Drama category of the 2012 National Legal System Good News Awards. From scriptwriting and original artwork to animation and scene dubbing, "Buxingzhe" was entirely designed and created by prison inmates, taking nearly two years to complete three seasons totaling 20 episodes.
"Buxingzhe" draws its material from prison inmates, is entirely created by inmates, and is intended for viewing by inmates. This marks Shijiazhuang Prison's innovative approach to education and rehabilitation, combining it with emerging social industries to produce the country's first series of animated works centered on educational reform, covering the entire process of inmate rehabilitation. After the first season of eight episodes was completed and aired, the Provincial Prison Administration promptly organized prisons across the province to study and learn from it. Other prisons unanimously praised the animation. Subsequently, the series will be gradually promoted and applied throughout the provincial prison system. The response from inmates has been overwhelmingly positive, with many noting the series' novel format and engaging content. They have been deeply inspired, strongly requesting reruns and eagerly anticipating the release of the next season. Currently, the second season of "Buxingzhe" is in active preparation and production.
Through the organization and creation of "Buxingzhe," Shijiazhuang Prison has preliminarily explored the principles of prison animation production and cultivated a group of skilled and capable animation creators who have garnered attention from social enterprises. In 2011, during the Hebei prison system's "Employment Promotion Month" event, one inmate signed an employment agreement with a company in the Shijiazhuang Animation Industrial Park prior to release. Multiple enterprises have expressed their willingness to welcome animation creators to work at their facilities after release, effectively motivating inmates to pursue learning. The prison promptly launched an animation production training program, with all 60 spots in the first session fully booked. It is reported that Shijiazhuang Prison will also communicate with social labor departments to help trainees obtain professional qualification certificates, ensuring smooth employment and certified positions upon release.
