The big dog Spike struts proudly around the yard, only to accidentally step on a nail. He howls in pain, wailing miserably, and even after the little mouse Jerry pulls out the nail for him, he remains lost in his own exaggerated suffering. Afterwards, Spike is deeply grateful for Jerry's kindness and gives him a bell, promising that whenever Jerry is in trouble, he only needs to ring the bell and Spike will rush to his rescue. Shortly after parting ways with Spike, Jerry is attacked by the old cat Tom. Of course, the bell saves Jerry, and Tom gets a thorough beating from the big dog.
After several failed attempts at catching Jerry, Tom completely surrenders, reluctantly offering delicious cheese. Just as he is about to give up in despair, he discovers that society is urging owners to leash their dogs. For Tom, this is undoubtedly the perfect opportunity to get revenge on Jerry...
