Kara Ben Nemsi is a stubborn Turkish tobacco merchant. He lives in Scutari, but his business is across the Bosphorus Strait in Constantinople, requiring him to cross the strait daily. One day, the government authorities issue a new regulation: everyone crossing the strait must pay a tax. Kara Ben Nemsi is deeply dissatisfied with this and would rather endure countless hardships to travel around the Black Sea back to Scutari than pay such an unreasonable tax. During his journey around the Black Sea, Kara Ben Nemsi and his companions also thwart a kidnapping conspiracy.
Creative Background
"Kara Ben Nemsi" is adapted from the travelogue novel of the same name by French author Jules Verne. Wang Dawei and Hu Zhaohong further revised the script provided by France. Directed by Hu Zhaohong and photographed by Hu Zhaohong, the film was completed in December 1995 under the commission of the German production company Dünyo Film. The film depicts Kara Ben Nemsi’s journey on a business trip, during which he refuses to comply with the government’s tax regulation for crossing the strait. Instead, he takes a long detour around the Black Sea, encountering a series of dramatic events on his way home. Given the story’s bizarre nature, complex plot, and numerous characters, the creative team employed methods of refinement and summarization, toning down the travelogue elements and strengthening the portrayal of characters’ personalities, especially the stubborn temperament of the protagonist, Kara Ben Nemsi. This approach resulted in a unique style for the film, blending Western and Eastern cultures and intertwining humor, wit, and bizarre, thrilling adventures.
