Alex the lion is the king of the jungle—oh wait! Here, the jungle refers to the bustling urban jungle, not the dense wild jungle. At the zoo in New York's Central Park, he is considered the top star attraction. Along with his best friends Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo, they are well-trained, and each of their signature moves, even the simplest tricks, earn cheerful laughter and enthusiastic applause from the audience. Although surrounded by sturdy cages and tall walls, the four beloved animal friends of New Yorkers live quite comfortably, never worrying about meals and even enjoying luxury and wealth.
One might think such a happy life is what many wild animals dream of and pursue. However, Marty feels that none of this is worth holding onto; he has always longed to return to the wild world where his ancestors were born and raised. Under the influence of four mysterious penguins, Marty begins to consider leaving. With the penguins' help, Marty quietly escapes the zoo and sets off on a journey to explore the wild world. Marty is missing! The remaining Alex, Melman, and Gloria are frantic and decide to find Marty at all costs. The three friends also escape the zoo they have never left before. Taking the subway and passing through transfer stations, they finally find Marty at the terminal. But soon, they are knocked out by New York police using tranquilizer guns. Marty's actions spark public reflection, leading people to believe these animals should return to nature, triggering widespread protests among citizens. Eventually, Central Park decides to send them back to Africa. When they wake up, they find themselves locked in wooden crates, already on their way back to Africa.
The ship rocks violently through wind and waves, making the four pampered zoo animals trapped in crates miserable. Suddenly, the four scheming penguins swoop in, quickly overpower the crew and knock out the captain. Due to a minor dispute among the four friends, all four crates fall into the sea. Carried by ocean currents, they drift to the island of Madagascar. Having been cared for by humans their whole lives, how will they now cope with the new challenges of surviving in the wild? How will they personally experience the meaning of the phrase, "The wild world is the real jungle"?
