To counter the impending invasion of the Trisolarans, aerospace scientist Cheng Xin spearheads the Staircase Project—an initiative to actively scout the Trisolaran fleet by launching the brain of Yun Tianming, who suffers from a terminal illness, into space. Upon learning that Yun Tianming has always loved her deeply and even gifted her a star, Cheng Xin is overwhelmed with regret and enters hibernation.
