With a big head and three strands of hair, Sanmao, a child from an ordinary family, once enjoyed a happy childhood. However, war left him as a helpless orphan. Without parents, even stray dogs and crows bullied him. In a moment of crisis, he was rescued by a kind-hearted old fisherman, experiencing a long-lost and fleeting happiness. But the good times did not last—local tyrants seized the fruits of their labor, and brutal soldiers mercilessly shot the old man. Poor Sanmao was once again orphaned. After bidding farewell to the old man at his grave, the thin boy wandered aimlessly and eventually found his way to the bustling metropolis of Shanghai. He dreamed of filling his stomach in this wealthy and advanced city, but it was an era dominated by warlords, speculators, big capitalists, foreigners, gangsters, and swindlers. What awaited him... This film is adapted from the famous cartoonist Zhang Leping's同名连环画.
