Sanmao is a poor child of the old society, with no one to rely on and enduring endless suffering. Yet, he is also a kind and brave boy, and his experiences reflect those of countless children in the old society. Emaciated and frail, Sanmao wanders through the brightly lit, laughter-filled metropolis of Shanghai. In the stormy streets and alleys, advertisements for foreign products are everywhere, but the prosperity of this city has nothing to do with him. The imported milk powder that plump babies enjoy in the ads is something he can only use the empty cans of as begging bowls. On rainy nights, Sanmao cannot even find a temporary shelter from the storm, as harsh policemen and arrogant wealthy ladies constantly drive him away. In the old society, where people preyed on each other, starving parents were forced to sell their own children, whose price was even lower than that of the dolls in shop windows. Sanmao roams every corner of Shanghai, searching for any means to scrape by, witnessing the harsh realities of the world along the way...
This film is adapted from the famous comic series of the same name by cartoonist Zhang Leping.
