The anime series "Space Battleship Yamato," launched in the 1970s–80s, is considered a foundational work of Japanese animation. Even years after its conclusion, this classic series continues to prove its enduring appeal. Not only was the theatrical film "Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection" released in 2009, but a live-action film adaptation titled "SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO," starring Takuya Kimura, also premiered in 2010. Now, it has been announced that "Space Battleship Yamato" will embark on a new venture: the theatrical film "Space Battleship Yamato 2199" is scheduled for release on April 7, 2012.
"Space Battleship Yamato 2199" is produced based on the content of the 1974 TV anime "Space Battleship Yamato," meaning its setting and storyline largely follow the original series. The director will be Yutaka Izubuchi, who previously served as mechanical designer for the earlier anime series. Leading a refreshed production team, he will create a new theatrical version with distinct visual quality and other enhancements compared to the original.
The full 26-episode TV anime series will be released in theaters across seven installments:
Chapter 1 (Episode 1 + Episode 2, approximately 50 minutes) premieres on April 7.
Chapter 2 (Chapters 2–7, each comprising 4 episodes) premieres on June 30.
Chapter 3 (covering Episodes 7–10) premieres on October 13.
