This holiday season, the new chapter of Illumination's globally beloved animated film series is about to unfold, with bigger dreams and more chart-topping hits. Ambitious koala Buster Moon and his all-star animal performers are set to stage the most dazzling extravaganza ever seen… and in the glittering entertainment capital of the world. But there's one catch: they must first persuade the world's most reclusive rock star—voiced for the first time in animation by music legend Bono—to join them.
Buster (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) and his crew have turned his new Moon Theater into the hottest venue in town, but now he has an even bigger ambition: to premiere an all-new musical show at the Crystal Tower Theater in the radiant Redshore City.
With zero connections in the entertainment industry, Buster and his performers—including the ever-worried pig mother Rosita (voiced by Reese Witherspoon), rocker porcupine Ash (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), the hardworking gorilla Johnny (voiced by Taron Egerton), the shy elephant Meena (voiced by Tori Kelly), and of course, the show-off piglet Gunter (voiced by Nick Kroll)—must sneak into the offices of the world-famous Crystal Entertainment, a company built and run by the ruthless entertainment mogul wolf Jimmy Crystal (voiced by Bobby Cannavale).
Pushed to the brink in a desperate attempt to get Mr. Crystal's attention, Gunter has a sudden flash of inspiration and gives Buster an outrageously bold idea, which Buster reluctantly adopts: to promise Mr. Crystal that their new show will be headlined by the legendary rock lion king, Clay Calloway (voiced by Bono). The problem is, Buster has never met Clay, and the legendary rock star has been a recluse for over a decade, having retired from music after the tragic loss of his beloved wife, with no one having seen him since.
As Gunter helps Buster design what could be the greatest stage spectacular ever, and the pressure (and terrifying threats) from Mr. Crystal mount, Buster embarks on a quest to find the legendary rock lion king Clay Calloway, hoping to convince him to return to the stage. What began as Buster's dream of fame and glory transforms into a modern fable, reminding everyone that the power of music can heal even the most sorrowful broken heart.
