"Music" Brush-Up Version is an enhanced edition of the anime film adaptation of manga artist Yūyū Ōhashi's "Music and Manga," directed by Kenji Iwaisawa. From the version released in theaters in January 2020, Director Iwaisawa spent approximately six months redrawing over 200 cuts. Utilizing the "rotoscope" technique to trace live-action movement, "Music" took seven years to complete. It garnered attention for its unconventional production methods, including hand-drawing over 40,000 animation cels and, for the climactic outdoor festival scene, actually constructing a stage and mobilizing musicians and audience members to perform a live concert. The film received high acclaim, winning the Grand Prize at the Ottawa International Animation Festival and the Best Original Music Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as well as earning a nomination for the Annie Awards. In September 2025, coinciding with the release of Director Iwaisawa's second feature-length film "Hyakue-mu," a revival screening of "Music" was held in this Brush-Up Version, featuring over 200 cuts personally revised by the director.
