It aired on Fuji TV every Sunday from 19:00 to 19:30, from April 2, 1978 (Showa 53) to August 26, 1979 (Showa 54). A total of 73 episodes. Note that from episode 65 onward, it was broadcast under the changed title "SF Saiyuki Starzinger II." It is a Toei Animation production. Coincidentally, around the same period, works based on the same subject matter were airing on other networks: the drama series "Saiyuki Series" on Nippon TV and the Drifters' puppet show "Tobe! Son Goku" on TBS. The original concept is based on the SF novel "SF Saiyuki" by Eisuke Ishikawa, which itself is based on "Journey to the West." It was produced during the peak of the Leiji Matsumoto boom that began in the late 1970s with "Space Battleship Yamato." Following the previous program "Wakusei Robo Danguard A," Matsumoto created original settings for the anime. Unlike the previous work, Matsumoto himself did not handle the comic adaptation; instead, Go Sakura serialized a manga version in "TV Land," and Shigeto Ikehara serialized one in "Boken-Oh." Furthermore, a shift in direction occurred from the giant robot series that had continued up to this point, such as the "Mazinger" series and "Wakusei Robo Danguard A," to the protagonist Kugo being a life-sized hero. However, perhaps influenced by the setting in "Journey to the West" where Sun Wukong can also grow giant, from "SF Saiyuki Starzinger II" onward, a setting was added where the protagonist grows giant to fight. The galaxy was in chaos. Because the Galaxy Energy radiating from the King Star, the center of the galaxy, had weakened, even benevolent space creatures had turned violent as Space Monsters and were running amok. To halt the progression of the situation, the power of Princess Aurora, who lived on a planet (Earth) in the solar system, was needed. Thus, Princess Aurora, accompanied by three knights—the galaxy's troublemaker cyborgs Jan Kugo, Don Hakka, and Sir Jogo—continued her journey toward the King Star, fighting Space Monsters and evil aliens along the way to restore peace to the universe.
