"Hitosuboshi-ke no Ultra Baasan" is a television anime produced by Knack and Yomiuri TV (commonly known as "Yomiuri Television" at the time of broadcast). It aired from October 16, 1982, to January 15, 1983, on Yomiuri TV, Nippon TV, and other stations every Saturday from 19:00 to 19:30. It consists of 13 episodes (26 segments in total). The series depicts the various chaotic incidents caused by the incredibly powerful and full-of-vitality Ultra Grandma. Incidentally, Ultra Grandma is set to be "a descendant of Tokugawa Ieyasu," and the Hitosuboshi family crest appearing in the background of the ending visuals features a design of a star placed in the center of a three-leaf hollyhock. As an anime program produced by Yomiuri TV and Knack, it was the first "grandma-themed" show in 12 years since the 1970–1971 broadcast of "Ijiwaru Baasan," based on the work by Machiko Hasegawa, and it was followed by another in quick succession. The opening theme song composed by Kenji Sawada became a topic of discussion, partly because Sawada's other composition, "La Saison," was a hit around the time the program started. The opening visuals contained a parody referencing the rival program "Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi" (MBS, TBS network), depicting Ultra Grandma appearing behind a child riding a dragon and playing a den-den daiko drum, ultimately taking over the child's position. According to staff involved in covering the series for "Animage," the creators expressed a desire for viewers to see Ultra Grandma "not as a grandmother, but as a pet." Incidentally, during its original broadcast, one of its selling points was "four segments per episode," counting the avant-title segment and the mini-drama before the next-episode preview as individual segments. New Cinema Japan has released DVDs (2 volumes in total) containing a total of 8 segments.
