A kind old man and his wife keep a dog that barks at a certain spot in the ground. When they dig there, they find gold coins. Their violent neighbor, seeing this, borrows the dog and digs, but instead finds only frogs and snakes emerging from an old pot. Enraged, the neighbor kills the dog. The kind old man takes a tree growing by the dog's grave and makes a mortar and pestle from it. When he pounds with them, gold coins appear again. The violent neighbor tries pounding with them but meets with disaster, so he burns the mortar and pestle. The kind old man is summoned before the lord with the ashes in hand and, known as "the renowned Flower-Blooming Old Man," makes a withered tree burst into full bloom, receiving a reward. The violent neighbor falsely claims to be "the original Flower-Blooming Old Man" and scatters ashes before the lord, but they are just ashes, so he is shot with arrows. Afterwards, the kind old man fills the lord's presence with flowers.
