This is a short film directed and animated by Kimura Hakuzan, who had previously worked on anime at Asahi Kinema based on rakugo and kōdan tales such as "Jitsuroku Chūshingura" and "Shiobara Tasuke." It features the protagonist Matsu-chan in an active role. The film was fairly well-received, leading to the production of a second installment, "Matsu-chan no Jōkuro." Kimura, who studied animation under Hashiguchi Hisashi—a disciple of Kitayama Seitarō (one of the founders of Japanese animation)—began his career as an animator. He produced numerous comedic works based on rakugo and kōdan, and while his animation skills were highly regarded, he was arrested by authorities for producing "Suzumibune," considered Japan's first pornographic anime, after which he vanished from public record.
