The OVA series titled "Midoriyama High School: Koshien Chapter" was released from 1989 to 1990, comprising a total of 10 volumes. A theatrical version, re-edited from episodes 1–4 of the OVA, was also released in 1990. Following the massive rental video success of the "Shonan Bakusozoku" OVA, which began release in 1986, many manga from similar youth magazines—such as "Be-Bop High School"—were frequently adapted into OVAs with rental video stores in mind. Among these, "Midoriyama High School" gained a cult following due to its unusually stylized artwork for the time, characterized by heavy use of speed lines and impact lines; its outrageous plot that, while seemingly a sports story, features explosive batting lineups and a Koshien Stadium that literally goes up in flames; and the eccentric performances by a豪华 voice cast led by Shigeru Chiba. It also aired on broadcast television via Yomiuri TV's "Anime Daisuki!" starting in 1990. From 1995, a re-edited version of the OVA was broadcast on NHK BS2's "Satellite Anime Theater," spanning 20 episodes. In this version, the ending theme "Okurete Kita Yuusha-tachi" by Megumi Nozawa was replaced by "Strawberry Pie wo Otabe" by ALI PROJECT, led by Mikiya Katakura, who also composed the OVA's background music. This change further enhanced its cult status. On December 6, 2006, a limited-edition DVD-BOX was released, containing complete versions of both the OVA and the theatrical film, along with a soundtrack CD. On November 11, 2015, a Blu-ray edition was sold, which included a collaboration comic with the BC League's Fukushima Hopes. Online streaming of the "OVA version" began in 2015. Separately, online streaming of the "Satellite Anime Theater version" commenced in 2021.
