In 1981, when the 20th Japan Science Fiction Convention (nicknamed "DAICON III"—so called because it was the third time the event was held in Osaka) took place in Osaka, an 8mm animation was screened during the opening ceremony. It was customary for the Japan Science Fiction Convention to be organized by university students from the vicinity of the host city, and DAICON III was no exception, with its operations led by university students from the Osaka area, including Toshio Okada and Yasuhiro Takeda. The animation itself was actually produced by Hideaki Anno, Takami Akai, and Hiroyuki Yamaga—all of whom would later go on to work as professionals—who were at the time students at Osaka University of Arts, having been commissioned by Okada and the others.
