The anime depicts the cohabitation of one young man and twelve guardian angels. Suitable for all ages.
In P.E.T.S, the protagonist (i.e., the reader) is an unfortunate young man. However, he possesses a love for animals and, in the past, has kept various pets, only to witness their deaths. Now, years later, those pets have been reincarnated as beautiful girls, returning to the protagonist as guardian angels from the world of maids. They remember the affection they received from the protagonist in their previous lives (i.e., as animals) and strive to repay his kindness by devoting themselves to him. Yet, each of them carries trauma from the moment of their deaths in their past lives, and many scenes portray the guardian angels struggling with these traumas.
The characters include twelve guardian angels reincarnated from a snake, rabbit, turtle, goldfish, parakeet, hamster, fox, tanuki, cat, monkey, dog, and frog. However, since readers could also create characters by combining animal past lives with names, there have been instances where character submissions from readers were openly solicited.
Aside from being adapted into anime twice, it was also adapted into a manga by Hasegawa Koji (3 volumes in total).
Though it follows the so-called harem story pattern—where a young man with no luck with girls suddenly finds himself surrounded by many who all adore him—the twelve guardian angels range in age from first-grade elementary school students to third-year high school students. Due to their wide age range and their cohabitation in a small apartment, romantic elements with individual guardian angels are minimal, giving it a stronger flavor of a pseudo-large-family story.
