The protagonist, Takao Taniguchi, transfers from the prestigious baseball school Aoba Gakuin to Sumidani Junior High. Hoping to join the baseball club, he visits the field and changes into his old Aoba uniform to participate in practice. Noticing the uniform, the baseball club members mistakenly assume Takao was a regular player from the famous Aoba team. However, Takao was actually a benchwarmer on the second string, far from being a regular player. Too timid to correct their misconception, Takao strives to meet everyone's expectations through tremendous, unseen effort. He eventually becomes the team captain and leads them forward. The story continues even after Takao's graduation, shifting its focus to a new captain as the protagonist and depicting the Sumidani Junior High baseball club's growth into a powerhouse.
