Now Retold: The Story of Kitaro's Fathers
Upon its release in November 2023, the tale set in an eerie village—featuring the encounter between Kitaro's father (the former Medama Oyaji) and Mizuki, the heart-wrenching fate the two confronted, and the intensity of the battle scenes—garnered significant attention and captivated many viewers. In 2024, it won the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize for Excellent Animation, and its momentum extended beyond Japan, with screenings overseas. In June, it was nominated in the Contrechamp category at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, bringing the story of Kitaro's fathers to the world.
This story will now be re-released in theaters nationwide on Friday, October 4th, as the "Shinsei Version," featuring 327 retaken cuts and a completely re-dubbed soundtrack!
