During the turbulent Bakumatsu period, there existed a revolutionary feared as "Hitokiri Battōsai." That man vanished from the public eye with the dawn of the new era, becoming a legend known only as "the strongest." Time flows on—Meiji 11, Tokyo's downtown. A wandering swordsman named Himura Kenshin, who carries a reverse-blade sword and vows never to kill, encounters Kamiya Kaoru, the acting master of the Kamiya Kasshin-ryū school. After resolving an incident involving a street slasher impersonating the "Hitokiri Battōsai" under the Kasshin-ryū name, Kenshin begins staying at Kaoru's dojo. Through meetings with companions like Myōjin Yahiko, born into a Tokyo samurai family, and the self-proclaimed fighter Sagara Sanosuke, and through confrontations with sworn enemies born from past karma, a Meiji swordsman romance, woven by those striving to live earnestly in the new era, now begins—!
