Studio Ghibli adapts the children's literary work of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones, also known for the original story of "Howl's Moving Castle," into the studio's first feature-length 3DCG animated film. Set in 1990s England, it depicts the story of a girl named Aya, who grew up unaware that she is a witch's daughter, being taken in by a strange household and living with a wicked witch. Ten-year-old Aya, raised as an orphan, lived without want at a children's home where everything went her way, until she is taken in by a suspicious duo: a flamboyant woman calling herself Bella Yaga and a tall man named Mandrake. Bella Yaga, who claims to be a witch, says she took Aya in because she needed help, and Aya begins working as Bella Yaga's assistant on the condition that she be taught magic... The project was conceived by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by Goro Miyazaki. The voice of the protagonist Aya is performed by young actress Kokoro Hirasawa, with a cast including Shinobu Terajima, Etsushi Toyokawa, and Gaku Hamada. It was an Official Selection at the 2020 73rd Cannes Film Festival. It aired on NHK General TV on December 30, 2020. In 2021, it received a theatrical release as "Earwig and the Witch," featuring some new cuts and additions to the television broadcast version.
