Inspired by J.S. Bach's "The Art of Fugue," this experimental short animation replaces music with painting, featuring geometric shapes that move and transform in sync with Bach's compositions, creating a soothing, trippy experience. Directed by the internationally acclaimed painter and video artist, Takashi Ishida.
A fugue is a musical form in which a main theme is answered by other melodies, with the theme and responses repeating and transforming in various ways throughout the piece. Established by Bach, "The Art of Fugue" is considered the culmination of this form. This work is an abstract animation that visually interprets "The Art of Fugue" using geometric patterns. An immense number of paintings, each corresponding to a different fugue theme, were meticulously and carefully photographed frame by frame from behind with strong backlighting, perfectly synchronized with the structure of the musical score. The result is an unprecedented visual experience unattainable through CG.
