This is the theatrical animation adaptation of the 1978 World Masterpiece Theater series "Perrine Monogatari," which aired on the Fuji TV network. It re-edits all 53 episodes of the TV anime while re-recording the dialogue.
The protagonist, Perrine, sets out on a journey from India to France, her father's homeland, together with her parents. However, she loses both parents during the journey, and the orphaned Perrine decides to head to Maraucourt, where her grandfather lives. After finally arriving in Maraucourt, Perrine learns that her grandfather is a cold, unfeeling man who knows nothing of human kindness. She then changes her name and begins working at the factory her grandfather owns... Will Perrine be able to open her grandfather's heart?
The original work for this series is "En Famille," known in Japan as "The Homeless Girl," and is recognized as the sister work to Hector Malot's masterpiece "Sans Famille" (known in Japan as "The Homeless Child").
