"Oya-san to Boku" is a hugely popular manga series that depicts the heartwarming, cozy daily life of Yabe-san, who lives in a detached house on the outskirts of Shinjuku, Tokyo, and the elderly landlady living on the first floor. The series, which includes the sequel "Oya-san to Boku Korekara," has sold over 1.2 million copies and won the 22nd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Short Story Award.
This time, it has been decided to air an adaptation on NHK, which the landlady reportedly loved very much.
On the first floor lives the elderly landlady; on the second floor lives me, a down-on-his-luck comedian. Her greeting is "Gokigenyou," her ideal type is General MacArthur (so refined!), she's never eaten gyudon or hamburgers, and she mistakes me for an actor... This is the "strange life together" of the 39-year-old "me" and the 87-year-old "landlady," filled with tears and laughter. A humorous and heartwarming daily exchange between just the two of them, thriving in a corner of the big city of Tokyo. It's a warm short story that makes you pause and gently fills you with tender feelings.
