It aired from April 20, 1995, to March 28, 1996, on TV Tokyo's "Anime Can" (Thursdays 19:00-19:30) time slot alongside "Bit the Cupid." The broadcast format divided the 30-minute slot between Bit and Bonobono, resulting in a series of 48 episodes, each 15 minutes long. It achieved an average viewership rating of 8.0%. While it didn't become a major topic of conversation, its unique style gained popularity, particularly among children, and it still maintains a dedicated fanbase to this day. Although some of the philosophical elements from the original work can be seen here and there, they are somewhat toned down. While there are occasionally moralistic stories, the anime was produced primarily as a pure gag animation, largely deviating from the original work.
Additionally, while several episodes are based on the original manga, most have been significantly altered due to time constraints (e.g., in "Boze-kun's Little Adventure," the characters Knowledgeable Squirrel and Mother Squirrel do not appear). It has been rebroadcast in the past on TV Tokyo's weekday 8:00 AM anime rerun slot (date unknown), on Animax starting April 5, 2004, and was also streamed on GyaO (in October 2005, April 2006, and February 2012). From March 13, 2012, it was rerun on tvk, airing Monday through Thursday at 5:30 PM. Furthermore, on TV Tokyo, compilation specials were broadcast on holidays from January 1997 to December 1998 after the original run ended. A DVD-BOX was also released on April 20, 2007, with rentals starting on April 27 of the same year.
