Takao Taniguchi broke his finger during a middle school baseball game and, due to the aftereffects, became unable to play baseball. After entering Sumidani High School, he spent his days watching the baseball club, which he couldn't actually join. Noticing this, the soccer team captain approached Taniguchi, suggesting that instead of clinging to a baseball career he couldn't have, he should try a new path and join the soccer club. Though a complete beginner at soccer, Taniguchi rapidly improved through the effort and determination he had cultivated in middle school, earning recognition from his teammates.
However, even after giving up baseball and dedicating himself to soccer, Taniguchi's passion for baseball never faded—he even volunteered to umpire for youth baseball games. This soon came to the captain's attention. Sensing that continuing with soccer might not be the best path for Taniguchi, the captain advised him to leave the soccer club and join the baseball club instead. The Sumidani High baseball team was a weak squad that lost in the first round every year, but after Taniguchi joined, gradual changes began to take place.
