In Okinawa in 1944, as the flames of war drew near, it was decided to evacuate those unable to fight to mainland Japan. Many children, boarding the aging transport ship Tsushima Maru, were in high spirits as if on a trip, though some did voice their anxieties. However, torpedoes fired from an American submarine mercilessly and swiftly sank the Tsushima Maru during its voyage. The military strictly ordered the few survivors, including the boy Kiyoshi, to never speak of the incident...
While the art style is simple and accessible to all, the content is nothing short of brutal. The depiction of people cast into the raging sea and losing their lives one after another is all the more heartbreaking because the story is based on true events.
