In the Taisho era, a frail and helpless young girl named Midoriko is taken in by a circus of oddities. The troupe includes a bizarre ringmaster, a strong giant, a mummy with severed hands, a sinister and malevolent snake woman, a boy who dresses as a girl, and a man with an abnormally long neck, among others. Within the troupe, Midoriko is repeatedly harassed and violated by these strange individuals. Just as she is suffering the most, a dwarf magician skilled in illusion joins the circus. His kindness towards Midoriko leads to a mutual affection, offering her a sliver of solace within the perverse and exposed world of the circus. The magician's arrival transforms the once-neglected troupe into a popular attraction, solidifying his status within the group. Just when Midoriko believes she has found true love, the magician, driven by jealous love, seeks revenge on the troupe members who had violated her... Finally, as Midoriko and the magician prepare to leave the circus, the magician is unexpectedly killed. Believing she could leave the past behind and start anew, Midoriko suddenly realizes that nothing has truly changed. She cries out and wails to the heavens and earth, but the nightmare still refuses to fade away...
