Beginning in the late 1930s, illustrator and experimental animator Douglas Crockwell created a series of abstract short films in his home in Glens Falls, New York. These films provided Crockwell with opportunities to experiment with various unconventional animation techniques, such as adding and removing wet paint frame-by-frame on glass, squeezing paint between two panes of glass, and finger painting. These individual reels, produced over nine years, were spliced together for presentation, creating an absurd relationship that instead highlights the abstract qualities of the imagery.—Kansas City Electro-Music & Arts Alliance
