Adapted from Sima Guang's "The Grievance of the Ox." A farmer drives his plow ox to till the hard, yellow soil, as the field ridges slowly stretch across the desolate highlands. At noon, the farmer rests under the scorching sun, while the ox nurses her calf. Exhausted from labor, they soon fall asleep. A vicious tiger, lurking in the distance, seizes the opportunity and leaps down from the hill, pouncing toward the sleeping farmer. The alert ox intercepts the tiger, and the beast fiercely attacks the ox instead. A fierce battle ensues between the ox and the tiger. After several rounds of struggle, the tiger, unable to reach the farmer, snatches the calf and flees. The ox gives chase, forcing the tiger to abandon the calf and escape. The calf lies bleeding on the ground, and the ox is overcome with grief. At that moment, seeing another chance, the tiger lunges once more at the farmer. The ox immediately leaves her calf and rushes to protect her slumbering master, engaging the tiger in another life-and-death struggle. With a desperate strike, the ox finally knocks the tiger unconscious. To guard against the tiger's return, the ox shields her master with her own body. The dazed tiger, witnessing this scene, feels both shame and fear, and eventually retreats. When the farmer awakens, he sees the ox standing over him, eyes bloodshot and mouth stained with blood, and finds the calf lying in a pool of blood. Convinced that the ox is a cruel demon, a bloodthirsty monster, he grabs a wooden club and beats the ox mercilessly. The exhausted ox, unable to defend herself, is tightly bound to a withered old tree, silently enduring her master's false accusations. As rumors spread and slander accumulates, the ox is condemned by all. Tears streaming like a spring, she is finally stabbed to death by her master.
