Adapted from Gogol's short story "St. John's Eve." A poor young man falls in love with his master's daughter, but the master obstructs their relationship. On the eve of St. John's Day, the devil promises the young man a large sum of money in exchange for his soul. After much hesitation, the young man agrees.
