This might be a maddening animated short film, but what draws you in is its music. Bolero was composed by Maurice Ravel in 1928. He first wrote a melody, then replicated it thirteen times, altering only the orchestration. The entire piece is a massive "crescendo," built upon the ceaseless three-beat rhythm of a snare drum, with two 17-bar melodies played by various instruments repeating continuously. Before the overwhelming finale, the music suddenly slips into E major (melodic major), creating a unique effect that stands in stark contrast to its otherwise simple technique.
