A shrewd merchant arrives on a small island, peddling a wide variety of necklaces, clothes, hats, and shoes—items the local indigenous people have never seen before. These colorful treasures captivate the natives, who can only stare wide-eyed, trying to take in every detail. A lipstick makes the female chieftain realize she can become even more beautiful. Eagerly, she adorns herself with new clothes, shoes, hats, and necklaces. Her actions are quickly imitated by all the island’s residents, and the merchant reaps enormous profits. The items the natives once used to adorn themselves—various animal furs, bones, and the like—are carelessly discarded on the ground, turning into a pile of "remains." These remains then become the very tools with which various animals, now missing crucial body parts, adorn themselves.
