The young and divine Rama broke the divine bow at the martial contest for marriage, winning the hand of the beautiful Sita. His father, King Dasharatha, feeling his age, decided to pass the throne to his beloved eldest son, Rama. However, Dasharatha had once promised a queen who saved his life that he would grant her two wishes. Manipulated by others, the queen demanded that Dasharatha fulfill his promise by exiling Rama to the forest for fourteen years and installing her own son, Bharata, as king. Though deeply reluctant, Dasharatha had to honor his vow, and thus Rama was exiled.
