On the vast sea stands a small island inhabited by various monsters. Two hundred years ago, they once coexisted with humans, but fearful humans, afraid of these strange-looking neighbors, launched a bloody and brutal war of expulsion against the monsters. During that calamity, the mothers of the close friends Red Oni Naki (voiced by Shingo Katori) and Blue Oni Kijō (voiced by Kōichi Yamadera) lost their lives. One day, the human child Takeichi and his younger brother Kotake (voiced by Yuna Shindō) venture onto Monster Island to gather mushrooms that could cure their mother's illness. By a twist of fate, Kotake is accidentally left behind. Following the elder's arrangement, Naki and Kijō take on the responsibility of caring for the little one. However, with the memory of his mother's death still vivid, Naki harbors hostility toward Kotake. Yet, in the days that follow, Kotake's mischievous and innocent demeanor gradually melts the hardened hearts of Naki and the others...
This film is adapted from the work "The Crying Red Oni" by the children's literature writer Hirosuke Hamada, known as the "Hans Christian Andersen of Japan."
