After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Japanese army grew increasingly aggressive, slaughtering and plundering our compatriots, earning the deep hatred of the people. Unfortunately, isolated and outnumbered, they were powerless against the invaders. As the Japanese forces advanced into the Central Plains, their vanguard arrived at a crucial stronghold: Maijia Village.
Japanese Captain Noda Ichiro initially believed that tiny Maijia Village, faced with the Japanese army's armored cavalry and mechanized troops, would surrender without a fight and fall into enemy hands. Unexpectedly, at the most critical moment, Mai Bao's father rallied villagers from neighboring areas to form a guerrilla unit. Using saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal, they made their own gunpowder and crafted landmines, putting up a fierce resistance. For a time, the Japanese army suffered repeated defeats and became terrified at the mere mention of Maijia's landmines. The cunning old fox Noda decided to capture a large number of Chinese people, coercing the weak-willed into becoming traitors to infiltrate the Maijia Village guerrilla unit. With inside help, they aimed to dismantle the landmine defenses.
The quick-witted and agile Mai Bao, though young, had great ambitions and wanted to fight alongside his father. However, his father stopped him, believing Mai Bao should focus on his studies to achieve greater things in the future. Determined to serve his country, Mai Bao joined his grandfather's opera troupe and infiltrated Liangcheng, occupied by the Japanese, to perform the patriotic play "Fist of Fury," hoping to awaken the people's dormant patriotic spirit. Unfortunately, he was captured. In prison, Mai Bao met Xu Sandong, a Communist Party member posing as a major traitor to infiltrate the enemy. With Sandong's help, Mai Bao narrowly escaped death and became a young undercover agent.
Mai Bao seized the opportunity to feign loyalty to the Japanese, even using his family's traditional Chinese medicine skills, quickly becoming a favorite in Noda's eyes. Meanwhile, Noda successfully bribed villager Cai Ding to infiltrate the guerrillas as a spy. Thus, a situation of spy versus spy emerged.
After Mai Bao's grandfather and other villagers were captured, Mai Bao's father decided to launch a night raid on the Japanese headquarters to rescue them. However, this information was leaked to Noda by Cai Ding. The Japanese decided to turn the tables: they tied the villagers to stakes, dressed them in Japanese uniforms, and dressed their own soldiers in villagers' clothes, planning to annihilate the guerrillas when they arrived. As night fell, Mai Bao, on the scene, saw his grandfather and others dressed in Japanese uniforms and grew anxious. The villagers, misunderstanding, thought Mai Bao had betrayed his country for personal gain. Mai Bao struggled internally. The ambush team arrived, but thanks to Mai Bao's cleverness—he climbed the city wall and used the searchlight to flash Morse code—his father received the warning and retreated safely. Seeing the Morse code from the searchlight, Noda grew suspicious. Mai Bao framed Noda's trusted subordinate, Xiao Chun, who took the blame.
Cai Ding leaked information again: the guerrillas were running out of gunpowder and lacked materials to make more, so they decided to steal gunpowder from the Japanese camp. Mai Bao and Sandong worked together inside and out, using a diversionary tactic to help the guerrillas successfully obtain the gunpowder. They not only got the gunpowder but also seized Japanese landmines. However, the Japanese mine detection team arrived on orders. Mai Bao tried to send a message using a kite, but Xiao Chun sabotaged it. Noda, now suspicious of everyone, forced Xiao Chun, Sandong, Mai Bao, and others to play a game. Overwhelmed, Mai Bao couldn't send the message, and Maijia Village was in imminent danger. In this critical moment, Mai Bao, with a child's boundless imagination, came up with an extremely clever method to deliver the intelligence. However, even Mai Bao himself wasn't sure if his father would notice the details of this transmission. With no other options, it was all or nothing.
The Japanese gathered their forces, with Mine Detection Captain Kameda leading the mine detection team. Noda couldn't help but feel smug. Seeing Kameda and Xiao Chun vying for Noda's favor, Mai Bao sowed discord between them, making them hostile toward each other. Both eager for credit, they led the mine detection effort. Unexpectedly, Mai Bao's father had already received the message and buried broken pots and scrap metal in the ground. Not only did they fail to detect any mines, but they also stepped on landmines, screaming for help. As the Japanese troops advanced, they were trapped in the minefield
