A married man on a business trip checks into an inn late at night. The innkeeper’s daughter, Kongque, falls in love with him at first sight and sneaks into his room to confess her feelings. Startled awake, the man hastily placates her by giving her the cross necklace from around his neck. The next day, as the man departs, Kongque defies her father’s objections and rushes out to pursue him. Drenched and disheveled, she reaches the pier just as the man boards a ship without looking back. Blocked from following, she calls out to him desperately, but he pays no heed.
