Our group chose intangible cultural heritage as the overarching theme, and after careful research, we selected "Fish Lantern" as the main subject for our creative work. By combining digital animation techniques with traditional hand-drawn animation through 2D frame-by-frame animation, we produced this graduation project. The story follows Yu Liang, who was left behind in a fishing village as a child while his parents worked away from home. During festivals, he and his village friends would learn the craft of making fish lanterns from the elderly in the village. As time passed, Yu Liang was taken by his parents to live in another city. Growing up, he became a designer. While browsing short videos, he accidentally came across a promotional video about his hometown. Returning to the village, he found it thriving due to tourism. Yu Liang visited the old man’s house, only to find that he was no longer there. Seeing an unfinished fish lantern inside the house, Yu Liang was suddenly transported to the vibrant lantern festival of the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The lively festival made him realize the value of the fish lantern craft. Returning to reality, he decided to carry on this intangible cultural heritage tradition.
