Just as he prepares to exorcise the ghost, Abao kneels down and pleads for mercy, explaining the ghost’s origin and the reason for its transformation. It turns out that Abao’s friend, Xiaoren, accidentally offended the Fire Marsh Deity—a representation of nature—while trying to save an abandoned infant, and was consequently assimilated by the marsh. This leaves Dingguo torn between destroying the ghost and saving a life. In the end, with what mindset will Dingguo confront the spectral being to restore the world’s natural balance?
