Recalling childhood memories, I lived in a small house in the suburbs with my mother, my alcoholic father, and my older brother who suffered from asthma and wore an eye patch for his amblyopia. We also kept a little bird named Janet. When he was young, my father was a mime clown, but a performance accident left him permanently disabled, and he spent his days drowning his sorrows in alcohol. My brother and I got along well, always seeking out new things to do, like burning ants, drawing together, collecting cans, and watching our pet lizard eat flies (occasionally feeding it a snail). One day, we took some money from our sleeping father’s pocket and ran to Ruby’s Candy Store to buy lollipops. My brother enjoyed collecting cigarette butts, and he had a dream: to become an acrobat, just like our father before his disability.
This film is the third installment in director Adam Elliot’s autobiographical trilogy.
