During the trial voyage of the new ship, the Duncan, a shark was caught. Inside its stomach, the sailors discovered a message in a bottle, though the letter inside had been blurred by seawater. From the remaining fragments of writing, it was deduced that the message was a distress call from a Captain Grant, who was stranded somewhere along the 37th parallel south. The ship's owner, Glenarvan, sought help from various sources to rescue Grant but to no avail. At the request of Grant's children, Mary and Robert, he resolutely decided to set sail on his own ship, the Duncan, to search for the captain. Alongside Mary and Robert, the voyage included Glenarvan's wife, Helena, his friend Colonel MacNabbs, and the French geographer Paganel, among others. They scoured every landmass along the 37th parallel south, scaling mountains, traversing glaciers, crossing swamps, and facing earthquakes, floods, and wild beasts. Finally, after a desperate struggle with bandits, they found Captain Grant on a deserted island.
