In the distant tropical jungles of Africa, four little girls are playing in the river on a lotus leaf boat when suddenly, a small island rises from the water. A horse, whose color is unclear—whether black or white—is galloping happily on the island. As the girls realize it is a zebra, it suddenly lies down motionless. Out of curiosity, they step onto the island to investigate, only for the zebra to stand up and carry them into a dark forest, where an old witch appears.
With a point of her finger, the witch transforms the zebra into a fence, trapping the girls. She then chains them up and goes to fetch water, intending to cook and eat them. To prevent their escape, the witch holds the other end of the chain, but the clever girls still manage to break free. The four girls reach the riverbank only to find their lotus leaf boat has drifted away, and the old witch is closing in. When they ask a crocodile for help crossing the river, the crocodile demands to eat one of them as payment. After a quick, hushed discussion, the girls come up with a plan.
