Sister Xiu Xiu and younger brother Kui Kui are both Little Red Guards. Kui Kui discovers a bamboo shoot growing in the back room of their house and excitedly tells his grandmother. After hearing his grandmother say, "According to the old rule, whatever grows on whose land belongs to whom," he eagerly hopes the bamboo shoot will grow quickly so the whole family can enjoy it sooner. He tries to keep Xiu Xiu from finding out about the bamboo shoot in the house, but his strange behavior eventually gives him away. After consulting her mother, Xiu Xiu believes the bamboo shoot should belong to the collective, leading to an argument between her and Kui Kui. Later, Xiu Xiu recounts past events and explains the reasoning, helping Kui Kui understand that his grandmother’s words are not always correct, thus raising his awareness. At the same time, his grandmother’s "old-fashioned thinking" is also challenged.
