This film blends television footage with animation to tell the story of how an ordinary, honest man becomes a criminal. 　　 The listless Vasily Vasilievitch kills two chattering women, drawing a crowd of neighbors who cannot believe he is capable of murder. The police arrive and recount what happened the day before: Vasily Vasilievitch, as usual, returns home from work and sits on the balcony reading the newspaper. Downstairs, four men gambling create a loud disturbance, but he merely treats it as an off-key melody in the rhythm of daily life. While watching a film, an extremely noisy television broadcasting a boxing match blares from an unknown floor above. Unable to bear it, he goes upstairs to politely reason with the neighbor, to no avail. Later, after setting his alarm and going to bed, a series of strange noises follows one after another, until he becomes hypersensitive to even the slightest rustle. And just as he finally manages to fall asleep, a sharp, piercing sound reaches his ears.
