A child draws a black rooster on paper. Soon after, a wild goose delivers a gold medal to the black rooster—it turns out the child’s drawing has won an award. When a katydid praises the black rooster for its beauty, it suggests that the rooster should go out and show itself to everyone. The black rooster follows this advice.
During its journey, the black rooster grows increasingly proud because of the gold medal, constantly boasting about how beautiful and unique it is. However, everyone says that all the credit belongs to the child’s effort and the paint. In a fit of anger, the rooster throws off the paint from its body, turning into a disheveled chicken. Later, amid everyone’s mockery, it discards the drawing paper and becomes a transparent chicken. Only when it tries to throw away the lines as well does it realize that it has no grounds for pride.
