On the surface, "Journey to the West: A Satirical Chronicle" presents a "retelling of old tales," but in reality, it offers sharp satire targeting the Kuomintang government of 1945, exposing issues such as "the economic collapse of the Kuomintang government and the rampant activities of secret agents," as well as "the decadent and hedonistic American lifestyle" (Zhang Guangyu viewed American masquerade balls and hair salons as symbols of Western societal corruption, which may come across as somewhat outdated).
