The anime creator John Canemaker's father passed away in 1995. For him, his father has always lived in his mind, much like the moon in the night sky, with whom he often holds conversations.
Years later, he created this 30-minute animated film in the form of a dialogue between father and son, recalling his father's violent temper during his childhood, the tense yet happy family dynamics, the hotel arson case his father was suspected of during his teenage years, and his father's rise in the mob from Italy to America... Through archival footage, photographs, comics, and animation, the creator reflects on his own childhood and the complex, indescribable relationship he shared with his father.
This film won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
